Community Update No. 12
Dear Perkins-sur-le-Lac neighbours, In this update, we wish to share information about our recent conservation and land acquisition initiatives, recent key meetings, and general business items.
Conservation Initiatives
iNaturalist Explained: Exploring Nature with Technology: This informative training session held on May 2, 2024, and hosted by Lac Rheaume’s own Ken Lange was a great opportunity to better understand how to use the iNaturalist app to record the flora and fauna of our area. Participants learned how this powerful citizen science app allows users to make observations (capturing plant and wildlife sightings using the iNaturalist app on your smartphone); collaborate with the community; integrate sightings onto the iNaturalist website; and other tips and tricks. Ken’s insights, expertise and technical know-how were very much appreciated by those who took part in this event. His presentation is available on our website.
Birding Walk: On June 1, 2024, folks from across the PSLL region braved the black flies and took part in a wonderful bird identification event with Marc Bosc as our guide. Marc has been birding since he was a teenager and is currently participating in the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas project. It was a magical event, with 40 different species being identified. Please see the full list below.
Ducks Unlimited: On May 24, 2024, CPSLL’s Justine Akman and Colette Labrecque-Riel met with Ducks Unlimited Chief Executive Officer Michael Nadler in order to make a connection with this important conservation organization. Aside from getting to know each other, the meeting resulted in CPSLL making a connection with the Association of Canadian Land Trusts. Many thanks to Michael for making the time for us.
Land Acquisition Initiatives
We continue to proceed with a variety of initiatives aimed at either the purchase and/or leasing of land in the CPSLL area and beyond, including in the Lauzon Cormoran Project. On this project specifically, we continue to work with the Lauzon group and the municipality to see if the lot lines can be redrawn to allow CPSLL to carve out more strategic land for conservation.
We are very happy to report that we are currently finalizing the details of a land lease agreement which will provide our community with access to over 200 acres of land. Low-impact activity trails and natural settings will soon be available for all to enjoy. Details to be provided once the agreement is finalized. Stay tuned!
Ruisseau Carroll Information Session – Save the Date! August 10, at 498 Chemin du Chêne-Rouge – Find out more about the leasing of land around Ruisseau Carroll and the possible purchase of adjacent properties.
With these projects in mind, we intend to put a project proposal together to apply for funding under the Government of Québec’s conservation funding programs, through which $144 million will be made available over the next four years to assist groups like ours who seek to acquire and protect land in perpetuity.
CPSLL General Business
Special and Annual General Meeting [Update to Bylaws]: CPSLL held a Special General Meeting and its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on January 18, 2024. At the Special Meeting, the CPSLL Bylaws (June 2022) were amended so that CPSLL can now acquire land and conduct projects in the areas surrounding the PSLL region. This was an important development, given that many of our neighbouring lakes are under the same development pressures as our own.
Board of Director’s Meeting, February 22, 2024: A group of residents close to the Lac Brassard/Lac Dam area, just north of the Blackburn Road turnoff, presented a land acquisition project. Their objective is to acquire a 44-acre property for conservation purposes in that area. CPSLL has been advising them and wishes them much success.
Meeting with Mayor Jules Dagenais (Mayor) and Jacques Lemay (Municipal Councillor): On May 6, 2024, Justine Akman, Joel Petit and Colette Labrecque-Riel met with the Mayor and City Councillor to discuss CPSLL’s mission, mandate, and projects. The Mayor and City Councillor were very generous with their time and were supportive of our activities. Since that time, CPSLL requested and was granted municipal recognition status (June 4, 2024), which allows us to apply for small grants from the city and use municipal meeting space.
Acquisition of Insurance: Having obtained recognition status with the municipality, CPSLL was in a position apply for participation in a very advantageous insurance program. Hence, CPSLL has acquired Director’s insurance, property insurance (purchase and lease), general liability insurance, volunteer’s and non-remunerated administrator’s accident insurance.
Privacy Policy: At its meeting on June 4, 2024, the CPSLL Board of Directors adopted a new Privacy Policy and an Internal Policy on the Management of Personal Information. These policies have been posted on the CPSLL web site.
